Brock was watching TV, when an emergency broadcast came on.
Earthquakes and tidal waves were threatening to tear the Hoenn region apart.
And two mythical Pokemon were headed for the islands between Hoenn and Kanto.
One was a huge blue and red Pokemon that was swimming this way, the other was a gigantic red and black Pokemon that seemed to be lifting parts of the sea bed to a level where it could walk on the water.
The helicopter that was following them gave live footage…
And Brock froze.
Kyogre, and Groudon, both awake…
And both heading towards the islands where Ash was currently enjoying his holiday.
“Oh Ash, what have you got yourself into this time?” Brock murmured.
He dashed over to the phone and nearly hit the redial button, the only thing that stopped him was the fact Ash would no longer be at the Pokemon Centre that he’d called from. Brock supposed that he should be glad they weren’t fighting, but that only served to puzzle him further, if it hadn’t been for Rayquaza, they probably would have torn each other to pieces last time they’d awoken, what had happened to make them leave Hoenn and come this way? The fact they were awake was the cause of the earthquakes and tidal waves, Brock knew something had to be very wrong to awaken them from their slumber.
Brock looked back at the screen, then made up his mind, and dialled a number he knew well.
“Cerulean City Gym, Misty speaking…”
Ash, Juni, Hayley, George, Danielle, Artemis and Sam were pulled behind the older trainers as they backed up a corridor, in front of them a wave of ghost Pokemon was approaching.
“Psychic, Ghost or Dark types anyone?” Iason asked, sending out his Absol.
Danielle pushed her way to the front. “Haunter, Kadabra, Ralts, Nuzleaf, Beldum!” She cried, sending out five of her six Pokemon, Artemis, emboldened by Danielle pushed her way through the older trainers and sent out her Misdreavus, and her Espeon, Judy nodded to Iason and sent out her Jynx, and her Shedinja while Darius sent out Medicham, Claydol and Xatu and Faith released her Chimecho, Gardevoir and Alakazam.
“The rest of you go the other way.” Darius told them, “We’ll deal with the ghosts then meet up with you back here.” Rex nodded and led the trainers without Psychic Pokemon up the left corridor, quickly. Sam stopped and looked back over his shoulder.
“Sam?” Ash asked, stopping when he saw Sam had a Pokeball in his hand.
“I’m going back.”
“Dark type?” Ash asked, nodding to the Pokeball.
“Psychic/Flying.” Sam replied, Ash looked over his shoulder, Rex was giving them an odd look.
“Ash? Sam?” Rex called, heading back the way he’d gone.
“Go now.” Ash advised. Sam smiled at him and ran back to the others, vanishing into the darkness of the corridor.
“You let him go back?” Rex asked as he got back to Ash.
“He has a Psychic type, he wants to help.” Ash replied, this Sam reminded him of his friend Sam, the Trainer he’d met when he’d seen Celebi and Suicune, who’d had to return to the past once they’d saved Celebi, that Sam wouldn’t have left his friends in trouble either.
“Come on then.” Rex said, with a sigh, Ash nodded, hating that he wouldn’t be much help against the ghosts, and followed Rex down the corridor.
They got about five minutes away from the battle, when the corridor ended in a cave in.
“Damn it.” Rex cursed, “I swear this place is designed to keep us in!”
Ash however was too busy staring the cave in and wondering if he could get his Donphan to break through it. “Guys…”
“You have a plan, Ash?” Hayley asked.
“Yeah, can you guys stand back?”
“What’re you planning?” Rex asked.
“Donphan!” Ash called releasing his Ground type. “Break through that pile with Rollout!”
“ASH!?” Rex shouted as Donphan went ploughing into the rubble, shifting more down and spraying all the trainers who hadn’t moved fast enough with dirt. By the time Donphan’s attack had worn down, there wasn’t any more rubble to fall down, and a path had been created that they could get through.
“I’m rather glad I didn’t try that, that was an awful lot of dirt.” A voice said. “We’d never have moved it by hand.”
“There must be empty corridors above us.” A second voice replied.
“Who’s there?” Rex demanded. Two heads poked around the corner of the pathway Ash’s Donphan had created.
“Kayla! Brendan!” Ash called happily.
“Hey Ash, nice Rollout on your Donphan.” Brendan replied as he and Kayla came down the pathway, “Dead end that way by the way.”
“How’s your leg?” Kayla asked, concerned.
“Fine thanks to Faith.” Kayla gave him a confused look, “Chimecho.” Kayla smiled and nodded.
“Great, guess we’ll have to hope the others have beaten those Ghost types.” Rex sighed, “At least we found you guys.” Kayla nodded.
“How many of the others are fighting?”
“We still don’t know where Miko and Neil are, but they’re the last.” Kayla nodded, “Come on.” The trainers ran back to the others, who were in the process of finishing off the Ghosts.
“Kayla! Brendan!” Danielle greeted them enthusiastically.
“No luck that way then?” Rex shook his head, then looked around.
“All the ghosties gone?”
“Yes but…”
“But what?”
“We couldn’t capture them.”
“Why not?”
“The Pokeballs had no effect on them, which is weird, because I caught my Haunter as a Gastly with a Pokeball.” Danielle said, thinking.
“I don’t think they’re wild.” Judy said slowly, “I caught one of those Baltoys earlier, and it went into a Pokeball, the only reason a Pokemon couldn’t enter a thrown ball is if it was already captured by someone else. And some of those Ghosts knew moves that have to be Trainer taught normally.”
“Some Pokemon don’t want to go in a Pokeball.” Ash mumbled, Pikachu smiled happily at his Trainer who smiled back at it.
“Fair point.” Iason said, having heard him, “But that many who wouldn’t go in? Combine that with the TM moves and something’s going on here.”
Ash was in agreement but didn’t say anything as a second round of ghosts appeared behind the group that had just returned with Kayla and Brendan.
“Not again.” Darius growled, as he and his Psychic Pokemon pushed their way past those without the right types to fight ghosts.
“Why do I have a feeling someone wants us to go this way?” Iason growled. He looked at Darius, then behind him, into the darkness, as Pikachu leapt off of Ash’s shoulder and glared at the Gengar in front of him, it was the one who’d attacked them earlier!
“Pika, Pikachu! Pika Pikapikachu pikapi! Pikachu!” Ash’s Pikachu snapped at the Gengar.
“Wait, I recognise that Gengar…” Ash said, looking at it carefully.
“Gengar Gen Gengar, Gengar.” The Gengar pointed to Ash.
“Pika!” Pikachu shook his head, and “Pikachuuuuuu!!!!!!” Pikachu fired a Thunderbolt off at the Gengar, who vanished into the floor for a couple of seconds, then reappeared.
“Gengar Gen, GenGengar, Gen Gar.”
“Pika! Pikachu pikapi Pikachu!” Pikachu replied, shaking his head again. Ash, who could normally understand what Pikachu was saying, was just as confused as everyone else. “Pikachu.” Pikachu growled the last in a comment that sounded to Ash much like a ‘stay away.’
“Gen Gengar.” The Gengar replied, and fired a Shadow Ball at Ash.
Pikachu fired a Thunderbolt at the black sphere, but couldn’t stop it in time to prevent it from hitting his trainer, who was knocked to the ground by the force of the attack. Instantly the other Trainers closed in around him, shielding him from any other attacks, as he groaned and sat up.
“PIKACHUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!” This time the Thunder hit Gengar, and it, and the ghosts with it, vanished, as the attack died. “Pikapi?” Pikachu turned to his trainer, who looked cross.
“What has that thing got against me?” Ash growled, as Pikachu leapt into his arms, he smiled at his partner.
“What do you mean?”
“That’s the second time that Gengar has attacked us since we fell.”
Darius looked at him, “No offence Ash, but are you sure?” Ash nodded, and Iason’s face turned dark. “What’re you thinking?”
“Ash was injured wasn’t he?” Iason asked, Ash nodded, “If we’re right, and those Pokemon do belong to someone, then they lured us here on purpose, and Miko and Neil being missing may not be a coincidence, after all, there’s no way we shouldn’t have found them by now, we’ve made enough noise to wake the dead.”
“Pika.” Pikachu said apologetically.
“Not your fault.” Darius responded, “My Pokemon would have responded the same way to an attack on me.”
“And mine.” Came the general consensus.
“My point is,” Iason continued, “That the Gengar could be focusing on Ash because he was hurt before, and whoever owns the Ghosts thinks he’s an easy target.”
“All fool them then.” Raven snorted, the young man looked at Ash, then smiled, “The only person Ash has lost to aboard is Kayla. He’s a damn good trainer.” Ash blushed under the praise.
“I happen to agree Raven,” Rex said, “Ash is a damn good Trainer, but I don’t think he should be in the firing line, if he’s the next target.”
“What do you mean?” Juni asked, returning her Jynx to it’s Pokeball. Danielle followed suit, and soon each Trainer only had one Pokemon out each.
“I think the older trainers should go in front and at the back, and have everyone fifteen and under in the middle.”
“Hey!” Danielle, Ash, Juni, Hayley, George, Artemis and Sam complained. “We don’t need babysitters!”
Darius snorted in an attempt to hide his amusement from the angry Trainers, as Rex hastily apologised.
“All right, all right, I’m sorry!” Rex said, as the younger trainers forced him to back him up against a wall, Pikachu, Larvitar, Butterfree, Wartortle, Haunter, Espeon and Charmeleon all looking like they were going to attack him. “I didn’t mean it the way it came out, I’m sorry, I am, I really am.”
“Guys, call off your Pokemon.” Darius laughed. The younger trainers smirked and called their Pokemon to order. Rex relaxed and the older Trainers burst out laughing. “Well you did ask for it, they are only two or three years younger than you.”
Danielle poked her tongue out at Rex, who responded as any mature adult would, he pulled a funny face.
Haunter decided to join in at that point, causing Rex to jump and land on his bum. “Ouch.”
Everyone cracked up.
“Fine, laugh at me.” Rex said, “I still don’t think Ash should be on the outside of the group.”
“Ash?” Sam asked, Ash teen sighed.
“I seem to be a magnet for trouble.” He grumbled, “At least Team Rocket aren’t here.” Ash sighed again, “I’m not staying out of any battles we have from here on in, just because of a Gengar.”
Iason nodded, “Alright, but you’re to stay close to the group.” Ash grumbled but nodded.
“Um, guys…” Kayla said, looking around. “Where did Artemis go?”
“Espeon’s missing too!” Katherine noted, “But where?”
“They haven’t gone back the way we came, we’ve been...” Darius growled, as a Gastly vanished through a wall further down the corridor. He ran further down the Corridor and swung his torch around, “Damn it, she was behind us wasn’t she?”
“You don’t think…”
“I’m afraid so.” Darius replied.
“From now on everyone stay in sight of at least one person, no one trails behind.” Iason growled, “We’re not going to lose anyone else.”
