Light Amongst Shadows Part 16

‘Imoto-chan!’ The moment Yugi had curled around the Puzzle Oneesan’s shout echoed around her head, causing Yugi to groan and close her eyes as the headache that was pulsing at her temples made the glow of the seal lighting up unbearable.

“Anesan...I’m sorry.” Yugi whimpered, able to form a coherent thought for the first time in a while as she felt the Shadows retreat from Oneesan’s swift work to shield her from the darkness, “I’m so sorry...”

‘I know but you were right. This was the best way to get in. You have nothing to be sorry for.’ Oneesan was worried as she worked, using her own soul to shield her little sister’s, able to sense just how far gone Yugi was, ‘Imoto-chan, switch with me, please!’

“N...No... I... I’ve worked out... how to save Domino...” Yugi tried to explain as she slowly got to her feet, using the barrier surrounding her to lean on as she did so, “And... And from now on... this body... is yours...”

‘Imoto-chan! Imoto-chan, no!’ Fear crashed over the link, but Yugi ignored it as she seized hold of the power of the Puzzle and called the three God monsters from the deck in the pouch at her side. ‘Please! Switch with me now!’

The trio appeared, the Gods who had served Oneesan so faithfully now answering her call at her most desperate point, destroying the roof of the building, the falling debris unfortunately not interfering with the painted seal beneath the rubble.

Bakura, who was distracted by the appearance of the God monsters, paled as she realised she recognised the look on Yugi’s face. She had seen it once before, on an almost identical face, when a Pharaoh had, in what should have been her dying moments, begged the Gods for help.

“Please.” Yugi begged the God monsters, the last little bit of strength she had giving out rapidly as she both fought with Oneesan for control and kept the three Gods ‘in play’, “Lend me your strength. Help me spread my light over the city. Help me give everyone more time. Help me save my family and friends! Help me save my home! Please!”

Osiris, the God of the Heavens, brought its giant red head down to her level and somehow passed through the barrier and nudged her gently, almost carefully. She stumbled back, only to be supported by Obelisk. The God of the Earth’s giant hand helping her stay upright while Ra’s light bathed Yugi. The God of the Sun boosting her strength and her light to the point it was almost painful for her.

‘Imoto-chan! Please! Don’t do this!’

“Thank you, all of you.” Yugi smiled gently, ignoring Oneesan’s protests as she let go of all the power she had gathered at once.

‘Yugi!!!’

There was a moment of agony, then everything was gone as light exploded across the city, coating everyone and everything in a thin layer of light that seeped into them, scaring away the Shadows that had been trying to draw near to rip away lives and souls.

The Leader let out a furious howl as his seal activated moments behind the explosion of light, somehow able to sense the different magicks going off even though their vision was completely shot because of the flash blindness caused by the light that had erupted from the centre of the seal.

He could hear the forge going into action, powered by the spell but there was no power in the golden items being born as the light raced out ahead of the magic, protecting every soul in the city.

For a few minutes Bakura could feel the ever present presence of Zorc pushed back, as the light chased away every sign of the Shadows, then, once the magic of the seal was gone, the light died down, retreating back the way it had come.

It moved back into Yugi, for a moment forming white feathered wings before retreating completely into the body. For a moment Bakura thought that was it, it was over.

Then there was a sound like glass shattering and seven puzzle piece like fragments of light hovered around Yugi, before five of them shot off in various directions, one moved over to Bakura and the last floated down into the hands of the body it had vacated, hovering just shy of the cupped hands of the Pharaoh.

Oneesan drew it close, sinking to her knees and holding the fragment close to her chest as she sobbed.

Yugi had given her soul to protect the city. The fragments were all that remained.

Yugi was gone.
